What is Lash Lifting and Tinting?

What is a Lash Lift & Tint?

A lash lift and tint is a semi-permanent treatment that enhances the natural lashes by lifting, curling, and darkening them to create the appearance of longer, fuller lashes - without the need for extensions or mascara.

The process involves applying a chemical solution that temporarily breaks down the disulphide bonds in the lash’s keratin structure, allowing the lash to be repositioned into a desired shape. Once the lashes are set in place, a neutralising solution reforms the bonds, locking and lifting them upward from the root for maximum definitionThis is followed by a tinting treatment, which darkens the lashes from root to tip, giving a mascara-like finish that lasts for weeks.

The result is bright, open eyes and naturally enhanced lashes that appear thicker, longer, and perfectly groomed.

The Origins of Lash Lifting

The foundations of lash lifting trace back to the early 1900s, when Karl Ludwig Nessler, a German hairdresser and inventor, developed the first perming technique for hair. His innovation, originally designed to curl head hair using heated rods and chemical solutions, laid the groundwork for all future perming technologies, including those later adapted for lashes and brows.

Fast forward to the early 2000s in Japan, where the idea of curling lashes through “lash perming” began gaining popularity. These early lash perms used small cylindrical rods and strong solutions to create a curled effect. While effective, the results were often overly tight and could sometimes cause lash dryness or breakage.

As the technique spread to Korea and Europe, beauty professionals refined the process, replacing rods with silicone shields that lift lashes gently from the root rather than curling them at the tip. This evolution created a softer, lengthened, and more natural result paving the way for the modern lash lift used in salons today.

Today, lash lifting has become one of the most sought-after beauty treatments worldwide, celebrated for its natural results, low maintenance, and ability to enhance the eyes effortlessly.

Duration of Results

With proper aftercare, lash lift and tint results last around 6-8 weeks, depending on the client’s natural lash growth cycle. To maintain healthy lashes and avoid over-processing, it is recommended to wait at least 8 weeks between treatments. Proper timing ensures the integrity of the natural lashes is preserved, allowing clients to enjoy consistently beautiful results without causing damage or breakage.
